Ornaments - Vintage
Plastic
After WWII, newer plastics began to be used in a broad variety of consumer products -
including Christmas Ornaments. Coupled with post-war anti-German and
anti-Japanese sentiments, reduced ornament production in those countries, and
the "admirable" quality of being unbreakable, the thoroughly modern
family of the late 1940's and 1950's was delighted to purchase American made
plastic ornaments. Any number of varieties were produced, and are represented
below, as well as some of the earlier plastic and celluloid pieces which were
products of the early part of the century. Youth today can hardly
imagine a time in the 1950's and 60's when plastic bags were valued enough to be
hand washed and hung on the line to dry. It gives one a perspective on the
novelty and perceived value of these early plastic ornaments.
